Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising the match official to review the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking striker's instinct

Everton's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
